NY Governor Signs Budget Law to Crack Down on Cannabis Black Market

As part of the new 2024 state fiscal year budget signed by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, the state Office of Cannabis Management can now seize contraband products and can use injunctions to close illegal marijuana operations. Additionally, the New York Department of Taxation and Finance has the power to levy fines totaling as much as $20,000 per day for related convictions.

​This is just one step in Hochul’s plan to stamp out unlicensed cannabis businesses. In April, the Democratic governor introduced a new education effort to show New Yorkers why they should patronize legally approved marijuana dispensaries. She also signed a bill weeks ago creating tougher punishments for unlicensed merchants.
